Weekend Escapes Closer to Home: Making the Most of Every Litre

  • Written by: The Times

Fuel price increases mean taht many holiday closer to home

Rising fuel prices are changing more than household budgets—they are changing the way Australians holiday.

For many families, a weekend away has traditionally meant filling the car and heading several hundred kilometres down the highway. With petrol and diesel prices remaining stubbornly high, that familiar road trip now carries a much larger price tag.

The good news is that a memorable weekend escape does not necessarily require a long drive.

Australia's regions are full of destinations within one or two hours of major cities. Whether it is a country village, a coastal town, a rainforest walk or a winery, travelling shorter distances can significantly reduce fuel costs while still providing the feeling of getting away.

For many families, the answer may be to travel smarter rather than travel less.

Instead of driving from Sydney to Byron Bay for a weekend, perhaps explore the Southern Highlands, the Blue Mountains or the Central Coast.

Melbourne residents have countless nearby options, including Daylesford, the Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley and Phillip Island.

Brisbane families can enjoy weekends on the Sunshine Coast, Tamborine Mountain, the Scenic Rim or Bribie Island without committing to a full day's drive.

Perth, Adelaide, Hobart and regional centres all have similar opportunities waiting just beyond their suburbs.

Accommodation choices are also evolving.

Holiday parks, boutique motels, cabins, farm stays and short-stay apartments often provide excellent value, particularly outside school holiday periods. Many travellers are discovering that one comfortable night away, combined with good food and local attractions, can be just as refreshing as a more expensive long-distance holiday.

Packing a picnic instead of eating every meal in restaurants can also stretch the travel budget. Local markets, bakeries and cafés often become highlights of the journey while supporting small regional businesses.

Higher fuel prices are also encouraging travellers to slow down.

Instead of spending hours behind the wheel, visitors can spend more time exploring walking trails, beaches, galleries, gardens and local shops. Less driving often means more relaxing.

Regional tourism operators are already adapting by promoting "stay close" campaigns, encouraging nearby residents to rediscover destinations they may have overlooked for years.

The environmental benefits are an added bonus. Shorter journeys consume less fuel, reduce emissions and place less wear on family vehicles.

A weekend escape does not have to be measured by kilometres travelled. Often, the best memories are made just a short drive from home.

Fuel prices may influence where Australians travel, but they do not have to determine whether they travel at all. Some of the country's most rewarding destinations are surprisingly close to home. As family budgets tighten, the weekend getaway is evolving—not disappearing. The new luxury may simply be finding somewhere beautiful that is only a tank, rather than two tanks, away.
